Having unprotected sex leaves you vulnerable to lots of different inconvenient and at times, downright embarrassing diseases, such as genital warts.
What Causes Genital Warts?
Genital warts is a highly contagious sexually transmitted disease caused by particular strands of the human papillomavirus (HPV). According to the CDC, HPV is extremely common and all American men or women who are sexually active are bound to be infected by this virus at some point in their lives. Not all strands of HPV causes genital warts, some strands are benign, whereas others may cause far more serious diseases like cervical cancer.
What do Genital Warts Look Like?
Genital warts look like regular warts, except these appear on or around the human genitalia. They are flesh-colored soft growths that looks like the top of a cauliflower.
Where do Genital Warts Appear?
As the external and internal genitalia among males and females is different, the location of genital warts will depend upon the gender of the afflicted person.
In women, genital warts may be found in the following areas:
- On the cervix, which is located about 3 to 6 inches inside the vagina
- Inside or outside the vagina
- Inside or outside the anus
In men, genital warts may be found in the following areas:
- On the penis
- Inside or outside the anus
- On the scrotum
- Other parts of the groin, including thighs
If someone performs oral sex on a person suffering from genital wart, then these nodules may start appearing on the lips, tongue and the throat as well!
Are there any other Symptoms of Genital Warts?
In rare circumstances, following symptoms may be caused by genital warts:
- Bleeding after sexual intercourse
- An itchy sensation, in and around the genital area
- Increased moisture on the genitals and the surrounding area
- An increase in the amount of vaginal discharge
Are Genital Warts Curable?
Unfortunately there is no cure for the HPV virus. However, the symptoms of genital warts are not permanent and may clear on its own within a few days or weeks, especially if you have a strong immune system. There are several home remedies available that can expedite the process.
Home Remedies for Genital warts:
Before subjecting yourself to harsh clinical treatments, we would strongly suggest that you try any of the following home remedies to make them go away fast.
- Duct Tape:
There is anecdotal evidence that using duct tape can get rid of the external warts on your genitals. The method is very simple, take a small piece of duct tape and cover the warts with it and then leave it on for about a week. After you take it off, you should be able to file away the warts easily with an emery board or a nail file.
- Apple Cider Vinegar:
Apple cider vinegar (ACV) is an effective topical treatment for a lot of different skin ailments as you have probably seen on a couple of different articles published on this site. The acetic acid in ACV has been used in the past to test for genital warts, however there is anecdotal evidence that the same acetic acid may also be used to treat the affliction as well! Before you decide to use this treatment, you need to first make sure that you are not allergic to ACV. Simple apply it to an unaffected area and see whether you can tolerate it or not. If you feel a continuous burning sensation in an area on your body that does not have any skin afflictions, then using ACV to treat genital warts may not be the right method for you.
For those who can handle the treatment, there are a few different ways of going about it:
- Take a cotton ball and pour a few drops of ACV on it. Hold it against the wart and use a piece of medical tape or Band-Aid to hold it in place. Leave it overnight and wash it off when you wake up.
- Conversely, after you have taken your shower you can repeat the steps mentioned above and leave it on for the entire day.
- Even for those who are not allergic to ACV, the treatment methods mentioned above may prove to be extremely painful. If that is the case, then you can apply ACV on your warts for 10 – 15 minutes several times during the course of the day.
If the above at home treatment works it should get rid of genital warts within a couple of weeks.
- Tea Tree Oil:
The natural antiviral effect of tea tree oil can also be leveraged to treat genital warts in both males and females. However, applying this directly on the afflicted area may prove to be a little too painful for some people, hence you may choose to dilute it a little bit with either almond or olive oil. For the potion to be effective, the diluting agent should be added to the tea tree oil in a 1:4 ratio (one table spoon of olive or almond oil to four table spoon of tea tree oil).
You can use tea tree oil a couple of different ways to treat your genital warts:
- You can take the diluted concoction and apply it on the warts using a cotton ball, pad or a swab a few times during the course of the day.
- You can also fill a bathtub with warm water, put about 6 drops of pure tea tree oil in it and then soak yourself in it a few times every day.
It can take anywhere between two weeks to about a couple of months to get rid of genital warts using tea tree oil.
- Witch Hazel:
Witch hazel is a strong astringent that can be leveraged to dry out and then get rid of genital warts. Regular topical application of witch hazel will cause the affected tissue to dry out and then eventually fall off. To apply the treatment, get pure witch hazel from any health store and apply it directly to your warts. Leave it on for about 10 minutes, after which you can wipe it off with a clean dry cloth. If you follow this regimen twice every day, you should be able to get rid of your genital warts in a couple of weeks!
- Castor Oil:
There is anecdotal evidence that one can use castor oil to get rid of genital warts as well! There are a few different ways by which you can apply this treatment:
- Soak a cotton ball in castor oil and then apply it against the wart and hold it in place with some medical tape or a Band Aid. Refresh this dressing two to three times during the course of the day.
- You can also make the treatment more effective by using garlic. This is because garlic contains allicin, which has strong antimicrobial properties. Take a garlic clove and cut it into thin slices. You may even choose to crush the garlic clove, if you do not mind its pungent aroma. Now apply a thin layer or castor oil and apply the sliced or crushed garlic on it. Cover the area with a piece of medical gauze, hold it in place using medical tape and leave it overnight.
- You can also mix castor oil with baking soda or corn starch to create a paste. Apply it to your warts and then cover it with medical gauze and tapes, as mentioned earlier. Replace the dressing ever few hours.
Castor oil does have a very repulsive smell. You can make this treatment a little easier on your nose by mixing castor oil with a bit of peppermint oil. You can even replace castor oil with any of the following oils for roughly the same result:
- Oregano oil
- Vitamin E oil
- Lemon oil
- Cashew nut oil
- Fish oil
- Cod liver oil
- Wormwood oil
- Sandalwood oil
Using castor oil or any of its substitutes should help get rid of genital warts in under two weeks.
Onion has strong anti-microbial properties that can be used to treat genital warts at home. There are a couple of ways you can go about it:
- Take an onion slice and place it over the warts and hold it in place with gauze and medical tape. Replace the dressing after a few hours.
- Salt is a highly effective astringent that can be combined with onion to make a highly effective treatment. Take a couple of onions and cut them into fine slices. Take one tablespoon of salt and sprinkle it on the onion slices, cover it and leave it overnight. In the morning put the entire mixture in the blender to create a fine paste. Now apply the paste on your warts and cover it with medical gauze and tape.
The above treatment should make genital warts go away in less than two months.
- Vitamin C:
Consuming Vitamin C daily provides a healthy boost to your immune system. However, there is anecdotal evidence that you can use Vitamin C tablets to create an effective topical treatment for genital warts. Simple take a Vitamin C tablet and crush it into small particles. Add a few drops of water to it to create a coarse paste and apply it directly on your genital warts and then cover it with a Band Aid. Doing this daily should get rid of your genital warts in a couple of weeks.
- Pineapple Juice:
Pineapple juice contains bromelain, which is highly effective against genital warts. It also contains manganese, which can help reduce the incidence of scars after the warts are removed. Take a fresh slice of pineapple (avoid canned ones as they contain preservatives) and squeeze as much of the juice out of it as you can. Apply the juice on your genital warts with a cotton ball and hold it in place with a Band Aid. Remove it after 10 minutes.
Usually genital warts just look awkward, but otherwise they are pretty benign. However, as discussed earlier in this article, these warts may become inflamed or they may start itching really bad. In such a case taking an oatmeal bath will help you get some quick relief from these symptoms:
- Take finely powdered oatmeal and immerse it in a bucket of hot water and let it sit for a few minutes. Now go ahead and take a bath in this water to get some relief from these symptoms.
- If you do not quite enjoy taking baths then you can create a scrub by adding a few drops of water to 1 tablespoon of oatmeal and you can use it as an exfoliate on the affected area.
- Olive Leaf:
Olive leaves are known for having strong antiviral properties and its use for medicinal purposes can be traced back to ancient Egypt. Unlike any of the treatments mentioned earlier, the olive leaf regimen that we are about to enumerate is not a topical treatment, but rather something you need to prepare and consume. Take one tablespoon of dried olive leaves, carefully remove the stalk and then steep it in hot water for about 5 minutes. After you strain the liquid, you are left with a cup of olive leaf tea. Have it two to three times a day.
Olive leaf extracts can stop the HPV virus from replicating, thus providing an effective and long term relief from genital warts. This is effective for treating genital warts that occur inside the body, such as inside the vagina or anus, or on the cervix.
Olive leaf is also a natural blood thinner, hence it is highly recommend that you consult a qualified physician before you start consuming it. It should definitely be avoided by pregnant women and nursing mothers.
Milkweed has been proven as a natural treatment for skin cancer and anecdotal evidence suggests that the milkweed sap can be used to treat genital warts as well. Just simply cut open the stem of the milkweed plant and apply the milky sap directly on the afflicted area. This should be done about twice a day.
- Banana Peel:
Banana peel contains an enzyme called polyphenol oxidase that has been proven as an effective treatment for genital warts. Simply cut a piece from the banana peel that is large enough to cover the afflicted area. Now place it carefully on your warts so that the inside of the banana peel should be touching the genital warts (you should be able to see the yellow side). Use some medical tape to ensure that the peel stays in place and leave it overnight. It should get rid of your genital warts in a couple of weeks.
- Licorice Root:
Licorice root contains glycyrrhizin which is renowned for its antiviral properties. Simply crush the roots, apply it on the affected area and hold it in place with medical gauze and tape. Refresh the dressing every few hours.
- Fig Leaf:
Fig leaves produce an enzyme known as ficin or ficain, which is said to help get rid of genital warts. Simple break open a fig leaf to extract its white, milky sap and apply it directly on the afflicted area. If you follow this process for about three times every day, you should be able to get rid of your genital warts in about 2 weeks.
- Bark of a Willow Tree:
The bark of a willow tree is a natural source of salicylic acid, which is one of the key components in many over-the-counter and prescription treatments for genital warts. Salicylic acid softens the keratin on the warts, which in turn makes it loose and helps get rid of the wart sooner!
To apply the treatment, simply take a small piece of the willow tree bark and moisten it with a bit of water. Apply the bark on the afflicted area and hold it in place using medical tapes or Band Aids. Change the bark every 24 hours. This should get rid of your genital warts within a couple of weeks.
- Thuja Oil:
Thuja occidentalis is an evergreen conifer that is found in the north-eastern part of the United States and the south-eastern part of Canada. Thuja oil works the same way that tea tree oil does, in that its natural antiviral properties can attack and eliminate the HPV virus from the afflicted area. Many credible home remedy guides suggest thuja oil as an alternative for tea tree oil. It can be applied to the genital warts for up to three times a day. Men can mix thuja oil with olive oil and apply it on the afflicted area. Women are suggested to mix thuja oil with thuja leaf tincture and apply it on their genital warts. The thuja oil regimen will get rid of the genital warts within three months, although there is anecdotal evidence of people getting relief in about 2 weeks.
- Aloe Vera:
Aloe Vera has natural anti-microbial properties that can help get rid of genital warts. You can extract the aloe gel by slicing open aloe leaves from the midriff, or you can purchase it directly from your local drugstore. Following this regimen will get rid of genital warts within two weeks.
- Nail Polish:
There is a lot of anecdotal evidence that points towards nail polish as an effective cure for genital warts. The logic behind this is that nail polish would seal in genital warts and will cut off the source of oxygen for the HPV virus, thus choking it. Simply apply the nail polish on your warts before you go to bed and after you take your shower in the morning. This should get rid of the genital warts within a couple of weeks.
- Dandelion Herb:
Dandelion herb is yet another natural antiviral agent and anecdotal evidence suggests that it is an effective cure for genital warts as well. Take the stem or the root of the dandelion, cut it open to extract the sap. Apply this sap directly on your warts for about three times every day. You should be able to get rid of genital warts within two weeks.
Contrary to popular belief, potatoes contain a lot of Vitamin C, which as we have already mentioned is highly effective for treating genital warts. The use of potatoes to cure genital warts have also been mentioned in Ayurveda, the treatise of ancient Indian medicine. Slice open a potato and rub it against your genital warts several times during the course of the day. You should see some positive effects of this treatment within a couple of weeks.
