Suffering from intestinal gas and the associated bloating is extremely common for people from all over the world. It has two main causes:

- Eating foods with a high fat content slows down the digestive process.
- Smoking, which causes you to swallow air as well!
Belching pretty much has the same causes as bloating, with a small caveat. People who suffer from gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) tend to suffer from belching as well because the stomach acids backs up into the esophagus (food pipe) from time to time.
Symptoms of Gas
Although everyone has a general idea of what the various symptoms of gas usually are, they have been consolidated underneath to create a uniform frame of reference:
- A loss of appetite.
- A tight or knotted feeling in the abdomen.
- Passing of gas either in the form of belching or flatulence. This can be voluntary or involuntary.
- Feeling bloated.
- A sharp jabbing pain in the abdomen, similar to that of a stomach cramp. The location of the pain may keep changing and may get better really fast.
Home remedies to Get Rid of Gas & Bloating
Getting gas is really common and it is usually not necessary to see a doctor. One can easily get rid of the symptoms with the help of the following home remedies.
- Avoid Triggers
At the risk of sounding clichéd, it is no secret that everyone is unique in their own way and the uniqueness can refer to one’s digestive system as well. You should consider keeping a food diary to check and see what triggers a bout of severe gas and then try to eliminate that from your diet in the future.
To get you started, it is usually suggested that one should stay away from beans and uncooked vegetables, especially if you have a faulty digestive system. Cooking tends to break down the chemical structure of the nutrients in vegetables, which makes it easier for the digestive system to break down further and absorb.
Another trigger for gas is foods containing artificial sweeteners. Protein is one of the building-blocks of life and you cannot ever consider eliminating it from your diet. That being said, it is also one of the toughest nutrients to consume. If the protein stays in an undigested form in your digestive canal, it tends to ferment and putrefy, causing gas with a nauseating odor!
Americans tend to be in a habit of consuming a salad before proceeding with the main meal. Salad consists of fresh veggies with simple carbo-hydrates, hence it does not require tremendous amounts of stomach acids to absorb the nutrients. However, by the time you get to the protein your reserves of stomach acids are usually depleted, resulting in incomplete digestion.
Instead of starting with the salad, many nutritionists suggest people with frail digestive systems to consume it while having the main course. This ensures that you get your nutrients from the salad, while your protein is consumed in an optimal manner.
Not only is water essential for survival, it also helps the digestive system to function properly. If the digestive system is performing in an optimal manner, then it minimizes the production of gas and the associated bloating.
The basic rule of thumb for water consumption is that men should drink at least 3 liters of water per day and women should drink at least 2.2 liters of water. People who live in tropical climates or those who are overweight should drink even more.
There is plenty of anecdotal evidence suggesting that drinking a glass of warm water may provide some adequate relief from gas. This is because not only the water helps you flush your digestive system, the heat from the water relaxes your intestinal muscles, thus providing you with some relief from the pain.
Probiotics are a group of healthy bacteria that promotes digestive health. They are usually present in abundant quantity in fermented milk products such as yogurt and buttermilk. Your local health food store probably carries several specialized probiotic drinks as well.
- Drink Liquids Before a Meal
If you drink water or any other liquids while you are having your meal, it tends to wash away or dilute your stomach acids that would help in digestion. Hence, it is highly recommended that you drink some fluids about thirty minutes before you sit down for a meal, so that you urge for consuming fluids while having your meal goes down significantly.
- Activated Charcoal
Activated charcoal has pores in its structure that can absorb gas, which would in turn reduce the symptoms of bloating and gas. It is usually available either in a powder or a pill form. However, it is highly recommended that you consult your doctor or the pharmacist before you start using them.

It does not matter how you consume it, as long as you consume the amount equivalent amount of 1 cup of pumpkin with every meal.
Bananas are rich in potassium as well, which helps reduce the onset of bloating. You can incorporate bananas into a fruit salad and have it for breakfast every morning. You can also consider eating a couple of bananas as a mid-afternoon snack.
Papaya greatly helps your digestive system to work efficiently and thus reducing the formation of gas. Feel free to incorporate papaya in a fruit salad and have it for breakfast every morning. It also makes an excellent mid-afternoon snack!
- Fennel seeds
Fennel seeds are a natural analgesic, which can help relax the muscles in your stomach and intestines, thus easing the painful symptoms of gas. It also has anti-microbial properties, which can help combat a gastrointestinal infection. There are a couple of ways you can consume fennel seeds:
- Chew on a teaspoon of fennel seeds after every meal. Its antimicrobial properties can freshen your breath as well!
- You can make yourself some fennel tea. It is really easy to make:
- Boil a cup of water.
- Add a teaspoon of fennel seeds and let it steep for about ten minutes.
- Strain and drink! You can also consider adding a teaspoon of honey for added taste.
For best results, consider drinking this tea after every major meal!
Two of the active chemical components of ginger, gingerol and shgaol relaxes intestinal muscles and combats stomach infection to ease the symptoms of gas and bloating. There are several ways by which you can incorporate ginger in your regular routine:
- You can shew on sliced pieces of raw ginger throughout the course of the day. If you find the taste of raw ginger to be too strong, you can take it with a bit of honey or jaggery.
- You can also make and consume some ginger tea in exactly the same way that you would make the tea with fennel seeds, as mentioned in the previous section. All you would have to do is replace the fennel seeds with a teaspoon (5 – 6 slices) of freshly grated raw ginger.
If neither of the above options sounds too appealing, you can probably find ginger supplements at your local health food store. The recommended daily does is about 1500 mg, to be spread out during the course of the day.
- Chamomile Tea
Although it is more popular for its relaxing and anti-inflammatory properties, chamomile tea can also help ease your digestive system. It is an anti-spasmodic, which will help ease the pain caused by the gas trapped in your intestines.
It is really easy to make chamomile tea:
- Fill a cup with boiled water.
- Put a chamomile tea bag in the cup. Cover the cup and let the tea bag steep for about 15 minutes.
- Take out the bag, and squeeze it to extract as much of its juices as you possibly can.
- Add a teaspoon of honey for taste (optional) and enjoy!
Although chamomile tea is best enjoyed at the end of a taxing day, you can drink it after every major meal!
Peppermint contains menthol, which has anti-spasmodic properties that helps ease the intestinal muscles while they are under duress from gas. It also has numbing properties, which tends to ease the pain as well. There are a few ways my which you can use peppermint to ease the symptoms of gas:
- Chew on a few mint leaves after every meal.
- Indian food is usually served with mint chutney, which is usually ignored by the uninitiated. Don’t do that! Not only is it delicious and gives an additional kick to the delicious dishes, it can also ease the gastric pressure in your tummy!
- You can also make and drink a cup of peppermint tea after every meal! Peppermint tea is usually sold in the form of tea bags and needs to be prepared and consumed the exact way you would prepare and consume the chamomile tea, as described in the previous section.
Anise is a spice that can help you recover from a bout of gas. Just like most of the other home remedies mentioned here, anise has anti-spasmodic properties that can ease the pain caused by gas trapped in your intestines by relaxing the intestinal muscles.
The best way to use anise would be to prepare and consume some anise tea. It can be prepared exactly the same way as the fennel and the ginger teas mentioned earlier in this article.
Some people may be allergic to anise. If you have not consumed this spice in the past, be on the lookout for allergic reactions.
This treatment is not recommended for infants.
- Coriander Seeds
Coriander seeds are another spice that eases digestion and reduces gas and bloating in the process. There are a couple of different ways you can use coriander seeds to ease the symptoms of gas:
- You can make a tea with coriander seeds, the exact same way you would make the fennel seed tea, as mentioned earlier in this article.
- You can mix a pinch of roasted coriander seeds to a glass of buttermilk and drink it after meals.
There is a lot of anecdotal evidence that points towards cinnamon as an effective cure for gas and bloating. There are a couple of ways you can utilize this treatment:
- You can make a cinnamon tea with a teaspoon of powdered cinnamon the same way as the other teas mentioned earlier in this article.
- You can also add half a teaspoon of cinnamon to a glass of warm milk and drink it after meals. If you are lactose intolerant, you can replace regular milk with soy milk for similar effect.
- Baking Soda
Sometimes you may suffer from gas because your stomach has produced too much hydrochloric acid. In such cases, you will suffer from heartburn along with the typical symptoms of gas such as bloating and stomach cramps. Sodium bicarbonate, more popularly known as baking soda can provide you with some immediate relief. This is because baking soda is an alkali, which neutralizes acids. Moreover, some heat is released during this process, which will help relax the intestinal muscles.
You can simply mix a teaspoon of baking soda in a glass of lukewarm water and drink it for some immediate relief. There is some anecdotal evidence that states that adding some lemon juice to this solution makes the treatment even more effective!
- Heating Pad
While suffering from a bout of gas, a heating pad may provide some welcome relief from stomach cramps. However, while applying a heating pad, make sure that you place it above a piece of clothing so that it does not damage your skin.
- Quit Smoking
Besides causing lung cancer, emphysema and increasing the chances of a heart attack, smoking may also cause you to feel bloated. This is because when you take in cigarette smoke, you suck down air as well, which may cause you to belch or pass gas.
Over The Counter Medication
Your local drugstore should have several over the counter (OTC) options to help get rid of your gas. They include chewable tablets, liquids and pills. Consult your pharmacist to select one that would be perfect for you!
If you are a chronic sufferer from gastric problems, or if you do not find any adequate relief from the aforementioned home remedies, then you should definitely consult your physician as your gas can be indicative of an underlying disease such as Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS), Food allergies (lactose or gluten intolerance), gastrointestinal disorders or even colon cancer!
