  1. Coconut oil

Coconut oil has all the nutrients that are present in coconut milk, hence it can boost your hair growth as well. Besides being an essential part of the coconut and banana hair pack, massaging your hair and scalp with coconut oil for about twenty minutes before you take a shower can go a long way towards boosting the volume of your hair.

  1. Olive oil

Olive oil is rich in anti-oxidants. This helps remove the dead skin cells as well as reduces the formation of the DTH hormone, stimulating hair growth in the process. Following is how you can use it as a topical application:

  • Heat two tablespoons of olive oil in a hot water bath.
  • Add two drops each of lavender, sage and rosemary essential oils and mix it thoroughly.
  • Rinse your hair with a mild shampoo and then towel dry it.
  • Massage your hair and scalp with the hot oil for about 20 minutes.
  • Wrap a moist towel around your hair for twenty more minutes.
  • Shampoo your hair!

It is recommended that you apply this treatment daily!

  1. Onions

Onions contain sulfur that helps in the formation of collagen. Collagen strengthens your hair follicles; hence a topical application of onion juice can help boost hair growth. There are a couple of different ways you can apply this treatment.

  • Using a food processor/blender: This consists of the following steps:
    • Grate four regular sized onions with the help of a food processor or a blender.
    • Put the mashed onion paste in cheesecloth and then squeeze hard to extract the juice.
    • Wash your hair with a mild shampoo and gently towel dry your hair. Make sure that your hair is significantly damp.
    • Massage your scalp with the extracted onion juice.
    • Let it sit for at least an hour.
    • Wash your hair again with shampoo.
  • Boil onions in water: This method requires the following ingredients:
    • 5 regular-sized onions.
    • 4 cloves of garlic.
    • 2 cinnamon sticks.
    • 1 liter of tap water.

Once you have procured the ingredients, you need to undergo the following steps:

  • Start boiling the water in a pan on an open flame. Make sure that the lid is on.
  • While the water is being boiled, dice the onions and peel the garlic.
  • Once the water has reached the boiling point, put all of the ingredients in the water and let it boil for about five more minutes.
  • Turn off the flame and let the liquid cool down to room temperature.
  • Strain the liquid.
  • Shampoo your hair.
  • While your hair is still wet, rinse your hair and scalp with this liquid.
  • Towel-dry your hair.

After rinsing your hair with this liquid, you should not wash your hair again for at least 24 hours. However, if the smell of onions become too much for you to bear, wait for at least 2 hours before you shampoo your hair again.

The onion juice treatment should be applied every other day for optimal results.

  1. Castor oil

Castor oil contains vitamin E and Omega-9 fatty acids, both of which work wonders in terms of strengthening the root of your hair. It also moisturizes your scalp as well as your hair, boosting hair growth in the process.

Ideally, one should apply castor oil via a hot oil massage. It is really simple to prepare:

  • Heat some castor oil till it is warm to the touch. Do not heat it directly on an open flame (castor oil is flammable) but use a hot water bath instead.
  • Rinse your hair with water and then towel dry your hair. Take out as much of the moisture from your hair as you possibly can.
  • Massage your scalp and your hair for about twenty minutes with the warm castor oil.
  • Cover your hair with a moist towel for about twenty more minutes.
  • Shampoo your hair!

Some people find castor oil to be a little sticky. If you do not want that, you can dilute the castor oil with equal parts of carrier oil (almond oil, argan oil, sesame seed oil, extra virgin olive oil, etc.). There is a lot of anecdotal evidence that squeezing half a lemon and adding four drops of rosemary essential oil can make this treatment even more effective.

  1. Rosemary

Rosemary is rich in anti-oxidants that can boost hair growth. It is also a natural cleanser, which can unclog your hair follicles. The natural sulfur and silica present in rosemary strengthens the roots as well. There are a couple of ways you can utilize rosemary to boost hair growth.

  • Using rosemary essential oil: Rosemary essential oil can be combined with a carrier oil (almond oil, avocado oil, coconut oil, jojoba oil, olive oil etc.) for a highly effective hot oil massage. Following is how you would prepare the treatment:
    • Heat a carrier oil of your choosing in a water bath.
    • Once it is warm to the touch add a couple of drops of rosemary essential oil.
    • Mix it thoroughly and massage your scalp and hair for about 15 minutes.
    • Leave it on for about half an hour before washing it off.
  • Via rosemary water: A preparation of rosemary water can also help in strengthening your hair and increase the volume in the process. Following is how you would prepare the treatment:
    • Take a cup of dried rosemary and boil in about 4 cups of water.
    • Once the water has boiled, let it cool down to room temperature.
    • Strain the liquid.
    • Use this liquid as a final rinse after you shampoo your hair.

Both the rosemary treatments can be used daily.

  1. Cumin seeds

Cumin seeds, known as jeera in the Indian subcontinent are an excellent source of vitamins that boosts hair growth. Following is how you can prepare and apply an effective treatment to boost your hair growth:

  • Soak a tablespoon of cumin seeds in olive oil or castor oil and let it soak overnight.
  • Massage your scalp with the cumin seeds and oil mixture . Use the oil to massage your hair from root to tip.

  1. Green Tea

Green tea is highly rich in anti-oxidants that can be used to boost hair growth. Following is how you would prepare and apply the treatment:

  • Use green tea bags to make the green tea as you would normally make it. You can either use fresh tea bags or you can use spent ones as well (tea bags that have already been used to make the tea). This is because the green tea for a topical application need not be as strong as the one you drink.
  • Let the green tea cool down till it is lukewarm to the touch.
  • Massage your scalp with the lukewarm green tea.
  • Leave it on for about half an hour and then rinse it off with some cold water.

This treatment can be applied daily as well!

  1. Indian gooseberry (Amla)

Indian gooseberry, more popularly known as amla (Emblica officinalis) is native to the Indian sub-continent. It is rich in Vitamin C and antioxidants which makes it ideal for boosting hair growth. There is a lot of anecdotal evidence that suggests that amla reduces greys as well! There are several different methods by which you can apply amla to your hair.

  • Massage: There are multiple ways you can incorporate amla into an invigorating massage to boost hair growth.
    • Using amla and coconut oil: Following is how you would prepare the treatment;
      • Cook a teaspoon of dried amla flakes in two tablespoon of coconut oil. They should be cooked till the amla flakes appear a bit charred.
      • Strain the oil and wait for it to cool down to room temperature.

Your amla and coconut massage oil is ready for use. Simply massage your scalp and hair with this oil. Leave it on for thirty minutes and then shampoo your hair with a mild shampoo. This treatment should be applied at least once a week.

  • Using amla and lemon juice: Lemon juice perfectly complements the anti-oxidant properties of amla and the two can be combined to massage the scalp as well! Following is how you would apply the treatment:
    • Mix dried amla powder with fresh squeezed lemon juice in equal proportions.
    • Massage your scalp with this mixture for about ten minutes. Let your scalp dry naturally.
    • Rinse your scalp thoroughly with some lukewarm water.

This treatment can be applied daily.

  • Ayurvedic shampoo: Amla can be combined with some other natural ingredients mentioned in Ayurveda (the ancient treatise of traditional Indian medicine) to make a natural shampoo to boost hair growth. To make this, you will need the following ingredients:
    • Indian gooseberry or Amla (100 grams).
    • Fruit of acacia or Shikakai (100 grams).
    • Soapnut or Reetha (100 grams).
    • Water (2 liters).

After you have gathered the ingredients, you can prepare the shampoo with the following steps:

  • Fill a wide bowl with water and soak the three aforementioned herbs in it. Cover the bowl and leave it overnight.
  • Boil the mixture the following morning. It should be boiled till at least half of the water evaporates.
  • Let the mixture cool down to room temperature.
  • Mash all the components in the water itself. It should take you about 10 minutes to do this thoroughly.
  • Strain the mixture and gather the liquid in a container.

Your ayurvedic shampoo is now ready to use. However, this should not be used like your typical shampoo. This is because as soon as it is applied on your hair, your hair will become a bit coarse and rubbing them together may lead to your hair being entangled and may break as well. Instead you should apply it via the following steps.

  • Rinse your hair with some lukewarm water.
  • Apply the ayurvedic shampoo on your head and let your scalp soak in the nutrients for about five minutes.
  • Turn on the shower and let the water from the nozzle wash away the shampoo.
  • Apply a conditioner and then rinse your hair again.

Apply this daily, and there will be a visible increase in the thicknessĀ of your hair in about 2 months! There is plenty of anecdotal evidence that suggests that your hair will shine and glow as well!

  • Hair packs: Amla can be used to make a hair pack as well. One simply needs to mix amla powder, yogurt and honey in equal proportions, apply the mixture from root to tip, let it sit for five minutes and then wash it off with water. One can replace yogurt with freshly squeezed lemon juice as well. This hair pack needs to be applied once a week for visible results.
